With this little article Tapfer im Nirgendwo introduces a new word to the entertainment business: Coco.
A Coco is a character that appeared in the pilot of a sitcom, but were later dropped for what ever reason. The name goes back to the character of Coco in the sitcom „The Golden Girls“ played by Charles Levin. Coco was the gay housekeeper in the girls‘ house. He was only seen in the pilot, because the authors realized what gold they had in Estelle Getty. Once they realized that she was going to be such a strong character they dropped Coco and added the character of Sophia to the show full time.
Another favorite Coco is the character of Claire played by Lee Garlington in the sitcom „Seinfeld“. The character of Claire the waitress was originally planned as a regular but was dropped and replaced with Elaine.
Now that we know what a Coco is, let’s celebrate all Cocos of TV history. Tapfer im Nirgendwo invites all readers to write comments with the name of every Coco You can think of. Let us celebrate the Cocos of the world!
There are some who are in darkness
And the others are in light
And you see the ones in brightness
Those in darkness drop from sight!
